While cruising during the pandemic hasn’t always been easy, there are some things that I think many of us are actually going to miss. Now, I hate to admit it, but there were some things about cruising during the pandemic that I think many of us, maybe secretly liked. After all, there were actually some good things.
Let me share with you the things that are either gone or are going away. And I think we’re going to have some mixed opinions on a couple of these. But we’re also going to talk about one thing that is not going away that is, I think is here to stay and something else that I think should go away hopefully soon.
Let’s get started.
Now, as much as I’m really happy that people are getting back to cruising and that the cruise industry is doing so much better, one of the benefits, I really think about cruising during the pandemic was the fact that cruise ships weren’t full. You didn’t even have to worry about chair hogs, you could just always find a chair. There were no lineups on cruise ships. That was definitely something really good.
And now, whether it’s good or bad, cruise ships really are ramping up their number. So, I have heard, even of some cruise ships during the time of spring break really being as full as 90% or even a little bit more.
Now, of course, it doesn’t mean that your cruise ship is going to be running at full capacity at 100% but you can definitely expect that cruise ships are going to become more and more full now. And really into those summer months.
Now, I know this one is a little bit controversial because some people really are very happy that some cruise ships are back to self-service buffets. And in particular, we have Carnival that is doing self-service buffets and now we have Royal Caribbean that is also doing self-service buffets.
While other cruise ships, I think, are still maybe doing full serve buffets and I’m not sure if this is going to be brought through across the board for all cruise ships.
Personally, I like the full serve just because I really do feel like it’s more hygienic. I think that there’s just less chance of getting any stomach bugs and that kind of thing. And that’s really why I like the full-service buffets.
But I also realize that part of the nice thing about buffet is being able to serve yourself and take the quantities that you like. And sometimes not even have to wait in those lineups while you’re waiting to be served.
So yes, unfortunately, these have either gone away on some cruise lines completely or are starting to go away on some cruise lines. I have mixed feelings about it. I realize it’s not pragmatic for cruise lines to continue with this forever. But I have to say, for some cruises in particular, I do still feel like there’s some uncertainties and I really prefer to have a cruise with confidence or flexible cancellation policy option.
Now, there are always deals to be had, so not to worry. But really, during this pandemic, we have seen different times where cruise prices have been really cheap or the perks have been really good. And we’re starting to see that the deals are really few and far between.
I have to say, if you are looking for deals, you could probably find some really good deals for the Mediterranean right now, even a little bit in Alaska, if you’re willing to maybe do an inside cabin, do take a look at that.
Now, this one is said to be staying. E-muster was a change that came about during the pandemic, but I think pretty much everybody agrees that this has been a good thing. So, the cruise lines and cruise passengers have said they like this. They want this to stay. There are just many reasons that it is so good.
It is the e-muster and basically what this is, is you doing your master drill or your safety drill from your own phone or even from your stateroom tv. Then you’re able to go to your muster station, still do a check-in, obviously this is something very important with a crew member, but you don’t have to gather for 30 or 45 minutes as a big group in one area for this muster drill.
There have been some rumors about this one. That this is going to be going away soon, and I am talking about pre-cruise testing.
Have you heard the rumors? Now, even though a lot of us have heard rumors about this, there are no actual facts about this. No cruise lines have confirmed that this is actually true, and I have to say, though I have been wondering about this one.
The pre-cruise testing, I have to say it was a little bit more challenging and I am finding that maybe, when I look at other travel requirements to travel elsewhere, that a lot of the testing requirements are changing. And I am starting to wonder how long is pre-cruise testing, at least in the way that it is being done right now? How long is this going to continue for cruises?
I have to say, even though I’m going to miss some of these things, I am really happy for life to be getting back a little bit more to normal.
