A very popular and well-known Carnival Cruise Line ambassador coming out with some strong words to Canada specifically regarding their summer 2022 Alaska season. And this is all coming out at the same time that Alaska is actually releasing their protocols. What ships have to do in order to sail there.
Moving right into our breaking news, Canada released, finally, their protocols that cruise ships must adhere to when coming to the ports in 2022. Now, of course, we know Canada has been closed to cruise travel since the start of the pandemic. They’ve not had a cruise ship up there in more than two years.
However, we are just weeks away from seeing one of the first cruise ships dock on the west side of Canada to kick off the 2022 summer season to Alaska. And so, we’re going to go through all of the protocols and we’re going to also talk about what Carnival Cruise Lines is saying in response to Canada.
In terms of what you need to know if you’re going to Alaska this summer season and stopping at a Canadian port, you must be fully vaccinated.
Canada has come out saying that anyone coming into the country and getting off the ship must have a vaccine in their arm and be fully vaccinated.
Something that’s interesting here is they don’t have an age on the vaccine requirement. As we know, there are young ages that cannot still get a vaccine. While we can speculate that Canada may come out with that in the coming days, they just said everyone must be vaccinated.
Now, there is a process for medical and religious exemptions but that is a separate process from the exemption that you would go through for the cruise line. For example, if you’re unvaccinated, you’re already going through a medical exemption process. There’s more paperwork that you will have to do if you are going to want to get off of the ship in Canada.
You’ll have to take all those documents with you. It does seem like Canada will be checking vaccine cards so definitely make sure you have that on your body.
This is a little bit frustrating. I’m going to be honest and I think that everyone is a little bit frustrated by this. Canada said there will be a testing requirement and people will have to test negative for Covid-19 in order to get off the ship and explore the Canadian Ports.
But that’s all we know. They said more information on that will be coming soon. We do not know anything, other than they did put an age with this. Under the age of five will not be required to follow a testing requirement. That makes me think even more that under the age of five won’t have to be vaccinated and can get off in the ports. But it doesn’t clearly say that, so we don’t actually know.
This is a very important point because this is what could be a big blocker for the cruise lines actually stopping in Canada. If Canada comes out and says that everyone must be tested within 24 hours of getting off the ship and you’ve got ships coming from you know Los Angeles or San Francisco and they maybe aren’t making it there in the first day, it’s going to be an issue.
Most cruise ships as we know already have testing requirements in place and you have to get tested between 2 and 3 days depending on the cruise line before getting on the ship.
Now, again, we can speculate that Canada is going to be smart here and they’re going to say whatever the testing requirements are to get on the ship, we are going to also have those same testing requirements and you’ll need to have physical copies of your negative tests in hand in order to explore the ports. But until they say that, we don’t know.
Now, this is where John Heald comes in. And yes, that is the Carnival Ambassador that we’re talking about. Just a couple of days ago, he released a very strong statement on his Facebook page that Carnival Cruise Line is going to do whatever they have to do to get to Alaska. And if that includes bypassing Canada because they can’t get their mandates together in time, they will.
Here’s the statement directly from John Heald’s Facebook page it says:
“We appreciate your patience as we continue to work out the details on our summer cruises to Alaska. With modifications to protocols the CDC announced last week, we are hopeful of getting more clarity to specific to Alaska very soon. The issue though at the moment is still about resolving Canadian government requirements. If this cannot be worked out promptly, the industry will seek to have the government regulation suspended like they like what took place last year and our itineraries will bypass Canada all together.”
Those are some pretty strong words coming from John Heald directly to Canada and look I don’t blame him. Carnival just added another ship to their summer Alaska season. There are now more than 50 ships in total going to Alaska from the United States.
The cruise lines are heavily invested in the Alaska market and Alaska has said that they are expecting their largest year in tourism ever. So, the cruise lines are doubling down. They’re saying if you don’t get this stuff to us promptly, we will be seeking the government to extend the order that will allow us to bypass your country and we will go straight to Alaska.
Now, there’s a couple of additional things here in the Canadian protocols that I don’t think are huge deal breakers but still important to talk about.
Canada is requiring every ship that comes into Canadian waters to provide a weekly report with the number of passengers on board. Those that are vaccinated, those that have medical exemptions, those that have tested positive for covid19 on board, those that tested positive for Covid-19 and could not get on board during embarkation and the number of kids that are on board that are all unvaccinated as well.
In addition to this, Canada has stated that all cruise lines must adhere to the CDC conditional sailing order and the European Union’s framework for Covid-19.
So, this might be why we saw all of the major cruise lines jump in a couple of weeks ago to the voluntary conditional sailing order program.
It’s interesting the timing of how things happen. You know we see all the cruise lines jump back into that conditional sailing order after we thought we were free. Only to have Canada say you have to be a part of that and you have to be adhering to all of those guidelines in order for your ship to come up here.
If these rules and regulations are not followed by the cruise lines, they will not be allowed to dock or allow their passengers off the ship in Canada which could potentially prevent them from continuing on to Alaska.
We are only days out from the first Princess Cruise ship hitting Canadian waters and we don’t still have an answer on testing requirements. And we would love to see those testing requirements come out soon and I hope that they do come out in the coming days so there isn’t you know this big collision between the major cruise lines and the country of Canada. Canada is a beautiful country and we want to be able to travel there.
